How Almy Education guides community colleges and universities to operationalize change and achieve math success at scale

math redesign case study: Waubonsee Community College

Waubonsee Community College needed to make changes to their developmental math program in response to the Developmental Education Reform Act (DERA) passed by Illinois in 2021.

Under the guidance and technical assistance of Almy Education, plus the connections and funding provided by the ASPIRE program, Waubonsee was able to design and implement a summer bridge program that worked for their unique student population.

It was a win because students were refreshed in math, they got free food, and they got to make friends.
— Jessica Moreno, Dean for Academic Support, Waubonsee Community College

math redesign case study: Mississippi University for women

In 2020, the global pandemic fueled a large drop in math course pass rates. In 2022, some pass rates more than recovered, but pass rates in MA123 - Statistics, a course important for nursing and business majors, stayed low.

As a result of Kathleen’s involvement, there is now a proven culture of support for struggling students with improved teaching strategies. Kathleen changed the culture of the math department and of college math teaching for the better with the results of increased student success.

We were able to make changes across the board, not just in Statistics, but in College Algebra and in the developmental math courses. That’s going to pay dividends for several years.
— David Brooking, Executive Director of Enrollment Management, Mississippi University for Women

math redesign case study: MANCHESTER UNIVERSITY

Manchester University is a small liberal arts university in Indiana with traditional college aged, residential students. Like other colleges, the university had challenges with their developmental math program.

A culture of continuous improvement guided by data has now been built within the university. It offers more support to students who need it and provide a consistent GPA cutoff for advising.

Retention matters…if we can retain five students, we’ve paid for the work.
— Celia Cook-Huffman, VP for Academic Affairs, Manchester University

Improving Course Outcomes in technical math at kaskaskia college

Kaskaskia College had two technical math courses, each for 3 credit hours. Content was redundant, and students didn’t like the self-paced computer-based approach. The courses weren’t meeting the needs of the technical area faculty or their students.

In 20 months, the college went from a technical math approach that had complaints from everyone affected to a streamlined, modernized approach that serves students and the technical area faculty. The percent of students completing the classes has increased from 31.25% over two semesters to 69% in one semester.

Kathy has a great ability to listen to faculty. She is an excellent problem-solver, helping faculty think differently and creatively about their curriculum and course delivery.
— Kellie Henegar, Dean of Arts and Sciences, Kaskaskia College

How Almy Education Helps ILLINOIS Schools Implement Transitional Math

Signed into law in 2016, the Postsecondary and Workforce Readiness Act (PWR) takes a student-based and competency-based approach to helping students achieve college and career readiness. While the PWR Act is composed of four strategies, this case study focuses solely on the requirement that over 700 public Illinois high schools implement transitional math courses by the 2021-2022 school year.

How Effective Redesign Can Improve Developmental Math Outcomes for Any Pathway

With developmental math courses having the highest failure and non-completion rates of any developmental subject, college educators consistently look for ways to improve their developmental math programs. Redesigning the curriculum is the first step.
