Sean Newmiller is a higher education professional with over a decade of experience in developmental education and developmental education reform. He is currently an English faculty member and the English, Communication, and World Languages department chair at Lake Michigan College in Benton Harbor, Michigan. A graduate of LMC, he was proud to return to the community college that started his educational journey. Under his leadership, the department has adopted a fully scaled-up co-requisite model for English and has begun to implement guided self-placement for all students, eliminating reliance on high-stakes standardized testing. Sean has been a peer mentor for the Michigan Center for Student Success, helping community colleges across the state implement developmental education reform initiatives. He was also a faculty representative on the Michigan Legislative Policy Work Group that recommended developmental education conditions for the Michigan Reconnect program and was part of the group to author best practices on Guided Self-Placement for the state. His work has been featured in Bridge Magazine, he is a member of the Southwest Michigan 40-Under-40 class of 2021, and he has presented regularly at the National Council of Teachers of English Two-year College Association national conference and the Conference on Acceleration in Developmental Education. Outside of education, Sean is a member of the social media reporting team at MichiganMarching.com, covering the world of competitive high school marching bands across the state. He lives in Benton Harbor with his partner, dog, and two cats.
